When I do a room makeover for one of my kids, I'm not sure if it's them or me who ends up being most excited about it. Okay, you're right, it's probably me. But, I really do like for them to have a space that reflects who they are. And Lily's room before wasn't really her anymore, especially since she'd had the same bedding I made her when she first got her "big girl bed" when she was 2.
So, when she turned 9 this week, I thought she could use a little update that looks more like her.
I'm calling the new room "Spring Garden Party", because it has just the right amount of girly combined with a hint of outdoors, great color, and a touch of prim & proper. And that pretty much describes Lily as well.
Lily says her favorite part of the room is the bed, which was the part that gave me the most anxiety since I took a little risk with the color of the headboard. I decided to replace her plain white iron bed from before with a thrift store score I found for $15 awhile back.
I decided I would give it a dose of Begonia from Sherwin-Williams, and it turned out to be just what I had pictured for the room...
For the bedding, I chose the Ruffle Rings duvet cover from PB Teen, and added several pillows of my own design.
I bought the gray & white chevron from a local fabric shop & added my recent addiction, rolled fabric roses, in yellow. (See more on those here.)
I think the "L" pillow is my favorite. You can find this fabric here. I added the "L" with my freezer paper stencil method in the Begonia paint.
{The large sham was made from fabric from Hobby Lobby, gray ruffle pillow was from Marshall's, & sheets are from Target. I'll tell you more about the polka dot comforter in a later post.}
Another of my favorite parts of the room turned out to be the tree branch curtain rod with bunting & tie tab curtains. This whole treatment cost me around $8. I'll tell you more about all this in later posts as well.
The art on the wall is simply a large empty frame I found on clearance at Hobby Lobby & sprayed gold, & a half bird cage, also from HL. I added a few paper flowers I made from scrapbook papers & clipped on with tiny clothespins, which all came from--of course-- Hobby Lobby.
Lily gave it her seal of approval, and I hope you all like it, too!
I'm still on a search for a few more elements in the room, because in our house, no room is ever truly finished. Hope you'll be here to see what goes in next.
Here are a few more posts on things in Lily's room if you'd like to see more:
I'll be back with more of the details I told you about soon. If you have questions, let me know, & I'll try to answer those as well. Meanwhile, I'm linking with a few of these friends!

ReplyDeleteAmy
I actually made that for her years ago, patterned after a set from Horchow, which I'm pretty sure is discontinued now. Sorry! Hope you find something you like! If you sew, you could probably make it!
DeleteSuch a lovely space. I can't wait to show my daughter. We're building a new home, and she'll eventually have her own room that will need some decorating!

I found this on Pinterest and I just had to stop in and say how much i love this! We're planning to move to a new house soon and I've been collecting ideas for my kids' rooms for a while. This one stood out to me because you incorporated so many of the colors and elements that I had in mind. My daughter has a bed very similar to this one, but it was her choice to paint in bright pink. I think it will work, though. I love the pop of the darker bed color against the pale blue wall. I wonder if you would share with me what color paint you used on your walls? Thanks for the great ideas!
ReplyDeleteThat wall color is Sherwin-Williams' Tradewind mixed at 75%. So glad you like it!
DeleteGorgeous! Love the pattern mismatch. It looks great.
ReplyDeletePlease stop by lifelovelarson.blogspot.com!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love the color of the headboard. The room is beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteAdorable! My daughter is named Lily too and she'd love this room, although she's not as old as yours. I love the color of the bed and how it pops! Fun branch curtain "rod" too.
ReplyDeleteSaw your feature over at Tip Junkie. Love what you did with the room! I'm a big fan of pops of color. I had the opportunity to repaint a wood bed for someone recently and I tried and tried to convince her to go with a fun color, but she wanted to keep things neutral with white. Yeah, it made sense for her situation, but boy was I bummed!
ReplyDeleteLove this makeover! :) I just started my blog..... www.elleninga.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteLove everything in your daughter's room, it's obvious by last pic that she loved it. Good job Mom.
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get all those awesome bird cages? I love bird cages, can do so much with them anywhere in house. I started out with bird "stuff" just in our room and bathroom but slowly but surely the birds have somehow migrated into living room and mud room even.
Anyway, you are sure inventive and so glad you incorporated so many cheerful colors. The bed color is to die for. That color is girly but not overdone. What a success. Just found your blog tonight "somehow" but will be back countless times to see what you've been up to.
I get my bird cages whereever I see some I like! I got the one on the wall in this room from Hobby Lobby & the turquoise one on the dresser was from Marshall's, but I painted it :)
DeleteFound you on handmade home. This is GORGEOUS!! I'm in love. New Follower.

Can you please tell me where you got the teal and white polkadot fabric on the bed?
ReplyDeleteLove this!! So so cute! You did a beautiful job!! It's fab!
ReplyDeleteI'm dying to know about the turquoise polka dot duvet! Can you please share the details on it? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI know! I'm sorry I haven't gotten around to telling about that duvet. One day, maybe I will give the how-to, but for now, here is the link to that fun fabric:

Thank you, thank you, thank you! You have no idea how many hours I've spent on fabric.com trying to figure out what fabric it was...my brain wasn't comprehending how big that dot actually was!
ReplyDeleteSo so so gorgeous! I wish you were my mom & could design my room for me :D love this! Your daughter is very lucky. To be able to look back in life, and remember a warm, cozy space of your own filled with wonderful happy memories... what more can anyone ask for? :)
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to let you know I featured you on Blissful and Domestic. Stop by and check it out.

love her room!!! i love what you did with all the splashes of color scattered around. i am pinning it too. i am a little chicken throwing bright colors in our house but i sooooo want to!!!
ReplyDeleteHi Julie,
ReplyDeleteThis room is so cute. I'm using your color scheme for the inspiration for our new baby on the way's room. It's a girl, and I love the color you picked for the head board. I am trying to do just a few pink accents and I think the headboard is the perfect color. What kind of paint and color is it? Thanks for sharing your project.
Shelly, I'm so glad you like it. The bed is Begonia by Sherwin Williams.
DeleteWhat do you have inside the blue polka dot? Batting? How did you make it?
ReplyDeleteI do apologize for not giving more detail on that--several people have asked. It is just a yard of the polka-dot, sewn to a backing of white sheet fabric to create a mini duvet cover. I then inserted an inexpensive white comforter that I had cut down to size to fit it. I made this because I wasn't able to find a comforter or throw in the colors I was looking for, and it worked. Hope that helps!
DeleteWhat wall color did you choose? I love it. It seems to be the perfect pale blue.
